Onward Tip: De-Stress by Listening to Nature Sounds

We love a good nature immersion, but sometimes life gets too hectic to channel Henry Thoreau and take long walks in solitude. So, when you’re feeling anxious and with little time to spare, listening to nature sounds can be a powerful tool for relaxation and stress relief. Natural sounds lower cortisol levels and help improve relaxation.

If you can’t get out in the real deal, try streaming nature sounds on Youtube and Spotify. Additionally, here are some tips to help you fully unwind and destress while enjoying the calming sounds of nature:

1. Create a Calm Environment
Find a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. Dim the lights, and if possible, light some candles.
Sit or lie down in a comfortable position, and allow yourself to settle in.

2. Focus on Your Breath
As you listen to sounds of nature, gently focus on your breathing. Breathe in slowly and deeply, hold for a few seconds, then exhale slowly. This helps activate your body’s relaxation response and allows you to fully engage with the calming sounds around you.

3. Close Your Eyes
Closing your eyes can help minimize distractions and allow you to focus completely on the nature sounds. Visualize the environment associated with the sounds, such as a forest, beach, or waterfall, to help deepen your connection.

4. Mindfully Listen
Pay close attention to the different layers and textures of the sounds—whether it’s the rustling of leaves, the crash of ocean waves, or the chirping of birds. Engaging fully with the sounds, rather than letting your mind wander, can deepen your relaxation and reduce stress.

5. Set a Timer for Intentional Relaxation
Give yourself permission to completely unwind by setting a timer for 10-30 minutes. This allows you to focus entirely on relaxation without worrying about the time, helping you truly disconnect from stress.

6. Limit Other Distractions
Turn off your phone notifications, close any unrelated tabs on your computer, and try to minimize distractions. This will help you calm your mind more effectively.

7. Use Nature Sounds as a Routine
Incorporate nature sounds into your daily routine, whether during work breaks, before bed, or during meditation. Creating a consistent practice will help train your body and mind to relax more easily over time.

Nature Sound Hack: On a recent solo wellness retreat, one of our Onward members discovered the Hatch alarm and sound machine. Not only does it keep you from charging your cell by your bed (not advised for quality sleep, especially when anxious), but it features high-quality nature sounds and a variety of sleep sounds like white noise, too.
